This topic has been on my mind for quite some time. I have discussed this with a few of my friends and we really haven’t come to any kind of conclusion. I read a blog post here and it kind if reignited this topic from the archives of my brain.
Just incase the topic is not explicit enough, I mean double standards between the male and female sex.
Let me give a scenario that has likely happened to you or someone you know. A Female working very hard to get to the top in her career is either seen as too rigid, arrogant by members of the opposite sex and even females as well. It can even get to a stage where females are looked down on for their success because they do not actually believe they worked hard to get it. Why?
Why is it frowned upon when a woman is successful, we would all like to believe the ‘a females place is in the kitchen’stigma is gone but it truly isn’t.
Let me take an excerpt from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie 2013 Ted talk (we should all be feminists)
We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls ‘You can have ambition, but not too much’.”
“We say to girls, you should aim to be successful, but not too successful, otherwise you will threaten The Man.”
I have had my peers tell me don’t aim to be too successful o, don’t buy a house, you don’t want to intimidate your man etc., this just proves to me the the stigma or whatever it is called is very much alive in the brains of both males and females alike.
On another note, why is it that women are always termed home wreckers? Is the title strictly for females? Because I don’t understand how a scenario where a husband cheats on the wife, the blame goes to the side chick(a female) but when a wife cheats on her husband, the blame goes to the wife. I am just very curious.
Another thing is the mentality that most females have, why do most females feel like things should be handed to them? These are another set of females that belong to a school of thought that I have no idea about.
There are a thousand more scenarios I can talk about but the aim of this post is to understand Why? I am genuinely curious.
